Stephanie Jelley, CEO of umojawa, a new online community encouraging social change, providing civic engagement, and rewarding organizations for their work that benefits others, will present at the Mindful Education conference at Central Connecticut State University on October 19, 2012.

Jelley has developed programs to help promote mindfulness and social-emotional learning in projects for teens, with a focus on those in at-risk circumstances. She co-facilitated the installation of the Mindfulness Without Borders “Mindfulness Ambassador Council” at Rutgers University’s Institute for International Peace. She will be presenting, “An Alternative to the Habitual Thinking: Changing the Inner Dialogue.”

Presented in conjunction with Capital Community College, the focus of the conference, Mindful Education: Building Inner Resilience, will be on how mindfulness can serve as a foundation for teaching and learning. Dr. Daniel Barbezat, Professor of Economics at Amherst College and Executive Director of the Center for the Contemplative Mind in Society, will be the keynote speaker. As an added feature, a live simulcast of the talk given that morning by the Dalai Lama at Western Connecticut State University will be provided. The Dalai Lama believes that public education must play a pivotal role in cultivating inner values such as compassion, justice, and self-discipline.

Conference workshops will not only highlight bringing mindfulness into Connecticut schools, but diverse topics such as using mindfulness in the treatment of posttraumatic stress and dissolving prejudice through mindfulness. The program and registration form is available at: http://www.ccsu.edu/mindfuleducation.
