Dynamic Concepts Development Corporation is currently seeking qualified beta testers for their software test generation and support framework, DynTest™. The flagship component of this suite is a test generator which creates C# source code tests by analyzing the metadata from the assembly to be tested. These tests can be executed using any of the popular test runners, including MsTest.exe and NUnit.

Creating and maintaining a rich set of tests at the unit, behavioral and integration levels often involves significant “plumbing”, in some cases as much as 80% of the total testing code. DynTest™ automates all of this by generating partial classes which contain all of the boilerplate and support code. The developer can then concentrate on the post-execution validation as well as any customized setup required for specific conditions. Since the effort involved in creating tests for “trivial paths” is virtually eliminated, cost of achieving 100% code coverage (especially when used in combination with Visual Studio 2012 Fakes) is greatly reduced. By achieving 100% code coverage, changes which introduce new execution paths are readily identified, and the risk of missing an important test case greatly reduced.

Other test skeleton generators (including Microsoft’s Unit Test Wizard) simply provide “empty” tests, and do not readily support keeping test suites current as the codebase under test evolves. DynTest™ utilizes a set of configurable factories to create the instances under test as well as supporting instances needed for parameters. In addition to using reflection to gather member signatures, custom attributes may be applied either directly to the code under test, or to an associated co-class to configure the tests which will be generated.

Advanced test patterns such as multi-iteration testing, interface implementation testing, and generic specialization testing are all supported. This type of testing is critical to ensure that all concrete classes properly support the contracts specified by their base elements.

Performance metrics are also gathered by the generated tests, including support for custom performance counters. These metrics may be included in the pass/fail criteria for systems which have formal performance specifications.
