The Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's™ is the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds to fight Alzheimer's disease, advance research to treat and prevent Alzheimer's, and provide programs to improve the lives of millions of affected Americans.
A pre-walk celebration was held at Budco on Friday, August 24, in which Budco team captains Karen Pensyl and Chris Lucas presented a check for $20,000 to Alzheimer’s Association’s (ALZ) Cynthia Strohschein, Jenny Maxse, and ALZ Michigan Chapter Director Marc Berke. During the celebration, Strohschein presented an award to Budco team member Bridget Deska for individually raising $3,500 in donations, and Budco team member Connie Orr for selling the most Promise Flowers. Through color, the pinwheel Promise Flowers represent the diverse reasons participants have gathered to walk. At the event, walkers write a personal message on their flower to further strengthen their dedication. Six Budco employees were also awarded Champions Club status for raising more than $500 each.
“We truly appreciate the commitment of Budco and their employees to our cause,” said Alzheimer's Association Chief Strategy Officer Angela Timashenka Geiger. "The funds raised through Walk to End Alzheimer's will fund programs and services for those impacted by the disease in their community and help to advance critical Alzheimer's research."
Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States today, and the only cause of death among the top 10 in the United States that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed. More than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease today, and it is estimated that 800,000 of those individuals are living alone. The Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s™ unites the entire community – family, friends, co-workers, social and religious groups, and more – in a display of combined strength and dedication in the fight against this devastating disease.
