Visionaries of award-winning Myrtle Beach campground, Nelson and Mary Emily Jackson, recognized nationally for significant and lasting contributions to RV industry.

Founders of Ocean Lakes Family Campground, the late Nelson and Mary Emily Jackson, were among 10 inductees that were honored by the Recreational Vehicle/Manufactured Housing Heritage Hall of Fame (RV/MH Hall of Fame). A gala dinner and induction ceremony for the class of 2012 was held on Aug. 6 in Elkhart, Ind. The Jacksons were honored for their 40 years of active participation in national, state and local campground associations. They served as mentors to campground operators by growing a small campground into the largest campground on the East Coast without losing their family approach to business.

In 1971, Nelson and Mary Emily Jackson opened a 30-site campground on family-owned oceanfront property in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Today, Ocean Lakes Family Campground is still a family business, owned by their five daughters, and features more than 3,500 sites. On an average seasonal day, Ocean Lakes has 25,000 - 30,000 guests enjoying the countless amenities that have made it a local favorite and a national vacation destination. It is the 2011-2012 National “Park of the Year” in the Mega Park category and has received that honor from the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds (ARVC) five times.

The RV/MH Hall of Fame was formed in March 1972. Its mission was and still is to honor leaders of the industry who have made significant contributions; to archive the history of the industry; to create and maintain a museum of historic RV/MH products; to promote the industries; and to provide a top notch meeting venue to hold shows and industry events. The Jacksons were among the group of about 50 nominations that were submitted. A panel of eight industry experts chose the final 10 to be inducted to the class of 2012.

"Nelson and Mary Emily Jackson would truly be proud to be inducted into the Hall of Fame," said Barb Krumm, Director of Marketing and Public Relations for Ocean Lakes Family Campground. "Ocean Lakes was a labor of love for them and to see it grow from its humble beginnings to one of the largest campgrounds in the country, is quite an accomplishment. They maintained a closeness with guests and teammates as the campground grew, which was a testament to their strong sense of family."
