New Dermalogica “Broad Spectrum” Olesome Moisturising Technology Enhances Sun Protection, and Then Some

Dermalogica’s world-renowned team of skin health experts have a new ally in the company’s expanded and highly effective SPF boosters against unwelcome UV rays.

Dermalogica customers have come to expect that Dermalogica, the company that lavishes tender loving care onto their skin, pushes the envelope when it comes to developing skin care alternatives that are free of common skin care irritants like artificial colours and fragrances.

The just-released Olesome-based moisturisers appear to have proven the point by taking sun protection to the next level.

Olesome can best be described as the next generation in SPF - an all-purpose sun protection plus hydration system in encapsulated form that, among other features, defends the skin from damaging UV rays, and delivers oil and nourishing vitamin e to the skin via a time-release feature. Additionally, the amount of SPF possible has increased from 30 to 50.

Termed Daylight Defense, this unique technology corresponds with new regulations that, according to the U.S. site, “[are] cracking down on testing and labeling”. This should make it easier for customers to select the product that works best for them.

Dermalogica wanted these SPF moisturisers to work on sun protection in the best possible manner--by providing proportional defense against both UVA and UVB rays. In a nutshell, UVA rays are ever-present, and UVB rays are the rays that usually cause sunburns. Only products that protect against both types of rays can be labeled effective against both these types of rays, and can be called “Broad Spectrum”. Dermalogica shipped their Oleosome products to independent labs to ensure this was the case. Each one of the four products passed with flying colours.

The encapsulation works by a controlled release delivery system that “pops” at different times. This falls under the umbrella of another recent innovation: Dermalogica’s UV Smart Booster technology.

In essence, UV Smart Boosters contain antioxidants vitamins C & A—crucial for skin repair and health—in an inactive form when first applied. The microcapsule containing these nutrients is activated only when exposed to UV rays (or when needed).

There are four of these just-released “Broad Spectrum” products. They are:

1. The Solar Defense Booster SPF 50. The most powerful protector of the group, this sunscreen has been amped up from 30 to 50 and can be mixed with your moisturiser or foundation for maximum UV defense.

2. Oil-free Matte SPF30. Perfect for oily or breakout-prone skin, this product mattifies. In addition to the Smart Booster protection, it contains natural yeast extract, horse chestnut and niacinamide (a form of vitamin B-3).

3. Super-Sensitive Shield SPF30. This completely chemical-free product is ideal for recently resurfaced, reddened or sensitive skin. Minimizes inflammation and contains calming lavender, green tea and licorice.

4. Ultra-Sensitive Tint SPF30 with especially hued earth minerals contain the ‘Broad Spectrum” technology and will even out skin tone while soothing environmentally reactive skin. It is also sans chemical additives and is imbued with balm mint and coneflower to “relax” the skin.
