The Humane Society of the United States is assisting PetSmart Charities Emergency Relief Waggin’ program deliver supplies requested by Jefferson Parish and Plaquemines Parish, La., in the wake of Hurricane Isaac. The pet food, crates, bowls, leashes, collars, cat litter, grooming supplies and other emergency-related items will be distributed to residents affected by the storm by the Jefferson Parish Animal Control and Plaquemines Parish Animal Shelter.
“The Humane Society of the United States is grateful to PetSmart Charities for always being ready at a moment’s notice to help provide essential supplies to pet owners affected by natural disasters like Hurricane Isaac,” said Niki Dawson, director of disaster services for The HSUS. “When residents are faced with the destruction of their homes and belongings, having the necessities for their pets can provide some peace of mind.”
The PetSmart Charities truck unloaded the supplies in Jefferson Parish around midday. The portion of supplies requested by Plaquemines Parish was transported by The HSUS.
The HSUS has worked with PetSmart Charities to provide pet food and supplies to animals in need throughout the country, including other emergency animal rescue operations. The HSUS will continue to assist authorities throughout the affected areas to meet the needs of residents returning to their homes and evaluating the damage.
