Patients who used H-Wave® therapy following rotator cuff reconstruction surgery showed a significantly greater range of shoulder and arm motion than their placebo counterparts, according to a study from researchers at Wake Forest University School of Medicine published in the peer-reviewed Journal BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders.

In the first-of-its-kind study that assessed the effects of H-Wave® device stimulation on range of motion and strength testing in patients undergoing rotator cuff reconstruction, 22 patients were randomly selected and assigned into two groups: an H-Wave® device stimulation group and a placebo device group. Both groups used the same treatment methods for one hour twice a day for 90 days.

After 90 days, researchers assessed five different ranges of arm motion. Those ranges of motion were: forward elevation, external rotation (arm at side), external rotation (arm at 90 degrees abduction), internal rotation (arm at side) and internal rotation (arm at 90 degrees abduction).

The results showed that patients who used the H-Wave® treatment compared to the placebo showed, on average, significantly improved range of motion. After 90 days, those patients that used the H-Wave® treatment had 46.1 percent less loss of external rotation compared to those that used the placebo and 42.7 percent less loss of internal rotation compared to those that used the placebo.

The H-Wave® is a small, portable, non-invasive and drug-free electrical stimulation device that is used in doctor’s offices, physical therapy clinics and can be prescribed for home use allowing patients to treat themselves. Previous research has shown that the device is effective in helping injured patients to reduce pain, improve range of motion and overall function, and reduce the need for oral medications. The device is designed to expedite recovery from soft tissue injuries.

Arnie Kander, Strength and Conditioning Coach for the NBA’s Detroit Pistons, has used the H-Wave® device for the past 17 years. Whether it’s reduced swelling, pain control or increased movement, Kander said he can see an almost instant change in his patients after treatment.

“You see the functional improvements immediately after use,” he said. “You are not waiting an hour or a day … in most cases, there is an immediate change. I have nothing but great things to say about the H-Wave® device. It’s a fabulous tool in what I do as a therapist in working with the sports teams.”
