Recent research shows a link between frequent dental x-rays and a person’s risk for developing meningioma, a common brain tumor. Patients who have had dental x-rays are one to five times at greater risk of developing meningioma than those who did not. Affecting the lining of the brain and the spinal cord, meningioma can lead to a variety of problems such as vision issues, headaches, hearing loss, memory loss, and seizures.
Dentists are now encouraged to more clearly weigh the need of an x-ray with its potential risks. Marc Slater of Ultimate Memory say, “We are very concerned about these findings and its effects on the brain and human memory. Dentists need to be more cautious when ordering x-rays and we are one hundred percent in support of this challenge.” Ultimate Memory encourages the use of techniques focused on improving memory, but recognizes that physical problems within the brain can reverse these improvements.
Exposure to ionization radiation found in x-rays is the greatest risk factor in meningioma. While levels of radiation in x-rays are less than in years past, patients are still strongly urged to be familiar with the American Dental Association’s guide on x-rays. Dentists and patients should clearly discuss and talk about the benefits, risks, options, and alternatives of x-rays, for both children and adults.
One of the potential side effects of a brain tumor is loss of memory, or problems remembering things. Ultimate Memory supports the efforts of physicians who encourage their patients to take note of memory problems. While many memory lapses can be attributed to fatigue, illness, or advancing age, this new study underlines the importance of reporting changes in memory to physicians so that problems can be identified in early stages.
