New Website Features Book That Makes Mastering Business Easy, Fast and Affordable

Award-winning professor and business executive Thomas E Heslin passed away unexpectedly in 2009, but his wit, wisdom and passion for business live on with the launch of, a new website devoted to helping individuals bolster their business knowledge, skills and marketability.

"Ya Gotta Have A Plan!" was an oft-uttered, favorite quote of Brooklyn-born Professor Thomas E Heslin. An award-winning professor and business executive, Heslin taught more than 30,000 students at one of the top-ranked schools in the nation, the Indiana University Kelley School of Business over the course of his 20-year teaching career.

Heslin passed away unexpectedly in 2009, but his wit, wisdom and passion for business live on with the launch of, a new website devoted to helping individuals bolster their business knowledge, skills and marketability.

Heslin's daughter, Maria, has launched the site as a way to carry on her father's commitment to teaching and to fulfill a plan the two first crafted some 13 years ago.

The site is centered around The Roadmap, An Overview of Business, the book Heslin wrote to accompany the course he taught and managed, X-100, An Introduction to Business. The two Heslins collaborated on every edition of the book, starting in 1994.

"My father genuinely loved everything about business, and he was one of the most devoted, hardest working people I have ever encountered," Maria said. "He infused that spirited dedication and commitment to excellence into his teaching philosophy and into The Roadmap."

Prior to teaching at IU, for 43 years Tom Heslin worked for companies that were part of the Bell System. He began as a 16 year-old mail boy and retired as a vice president and held numerous leadership positions in between, often brought in to rescue a poor-performing location and taking it to the top. Heslin incorporated this range of experience and knowledge into his second career as a professor.

The Heslins produced a new edition of the The Roadmap every 12-18 months, updating it with the most current facts and stats, and enhancing it as they both continued learning more and more about business in their own capacities.

"My dad determined early in his teaching career that other textbooks on the market were bloated at 600 or 700 pages with too much information and focused more on theory," Maria said, "so he wrote his own.

The Roadmap was popular because it conveyed useful, practical and uncomplicated business information in an easily digested format. It boiled down the fundamentals of business into about 250 pages and 14 major business topics, and its soft cover, spiral binding and space set aside for note taking made it a practical tool."

The 2009 edition was the last Roadmap the Heslins wrote together, and at the time it was the first business text used in a university to mention then newly elected President Obama and correctly forecast the rapidly accelerating downturn of the US and global economies.

"The key concepts and principles of the book are fresh and critical," Maria said. "Statistics of course change every year -- or every day depending on what the figures are capturing -- so we'll provide regular updates on this site to keep stats current."

She says the book has value well beyond the classroom.

"Anyone seeking ways to enhance their business skills and marketability; fill in the gaps of their education; considering a career change; needing a fast, affordable way to learn; or looking for a better understanding of facets of business beyond their area of expertise can benefit from The Roadmap," Maria said.

In addition to the book, features companion flashcards, called "Quiz Cards." Both The Roadmap and Quiz Cards are available for sale at a fraction of their original prices. A free subscription to the site's e-zine is available too. Called "GPS to Success," playing off the theme of The Roadmap as a guide to solid career and business decision making, the monthly publication will feature practical, relevant business strategies and interviews with successful business practitioners.

Maria plans to grow the site over time with a blog and additional educational materials to help individuals succeed in business. She hopes becomes a destination for individuals seeking an online home to supplement their business learning.

"Back in 1999 my dad and I crafted a business plan to build a website that would allow him to exchange ideas, stay connected with students once they left his classroom, and share his experiences and knowledge with a broader audience," Maria said. "Between his teaching and family time and my going to graduate school and working, we never got around to it. So, I took his 'gotta have a plan' phrase to heart and finally put our plan into action.

My father cared so much about his students and teaching business, and he had so much valuable information to convey," she said. "We very much enjoyed working together throughout the years to produce The Roadmap, and I think he'd love the fact that his ideas and philosophies are living on and being shared."

About Thomas Edward Heslin ...
Tom began his teaching career at Indiana University with the course Organizational Behavior, and in 1991 he redesigned and reintroduced the Introduction to Business program to the Kelley School of Business curriculum. Tom retired from teaching in December 2008. During his tenure as a professor he taught more than 30,000 students and won numerous "Outstanding Professor" awards. Prior to joining the IU faculty, Heslin lived all around the country working for the AT&T Company, Western Electric, Bell Laboratories and the Teletype Corporation, all part of the Bell System, for 43 years.

Maria collaborated with her father on every issue of The Roadmap, providing writing, editing, research and design. She serves as the first female Deputy Mayor of Bloomington, Ind., where she directs the City's strategic planning initiatives, leads the innovation and budget teams, sets policy, manages the Office of the Mayor, and collaborates with the 700-member staff to fulfill the mayor's goals. Maria has a B.A. and two Master's degrees, in Journalism and Arts Administration, from Indiana University.
