In her children’s storybookMy Two Shepherds in the Garden: A Lesson in Listening” (published by Trafford Publishing), Maureen Fine tells a light-hearted story about her two lovable German Shepherds.

Happy and Blackie love digging holes. One day, Dad brings home some trees to plant, asking the dogs to help on the condition that they dig the holes where he wants them to. Happy, always impatient, acts too fast, assuming he knows where Dad wants them to dig. He quickly gets in trouble. However Blackie sits still, listening to all of Dad’s instructions, and he is rewarded for doing a good job.

An excerpt from “My Two Shepherds in the Garden”:

“Happy laid down, on the ground, in front of dad. He put his head down, his paws went over his eyes and he started to whimper, expecting the worse, but dad did not spank him. Instead, dad said, in a firm voice, ‘Happy you were a bad dog for running away from dad before I finished talking. You would not have made the mistake, of digging up the carrots, if you had patience to listen to everything I was going to say.’ Dad continued, ‘Happy, do you understand what you did wrong?’”

Fine hopes young readers find something to laugh about in “My Two Shepherds in the Garden” with the original photographs included in the book. “It will also inspire children to love and enjoy their pets more,” she says. “And in addition, will help to improve reading skills, comprehension and patience.”
