If detected early, posture imbalances and scoliosis can also be reduced or eliminated through treatments offered at SF Custom Chiropractic.

To honor National School Backpack Awareness Day, celebrated on September 19, San Francisco based chiropractor Dr. Adam Jacobs of SF Custom Chiropractic is offering his services to perform posture and scoliosis checks for San Francisco students in both schools and his office located downtown. As the 2012 school year begins Dr. Jacobs hopes to help students stay healthy, focused and pain free by offering a free spinal analysis and posture check.

“Each school year brings excitement and a sense of a new beginning with new teachers, friends, books and supplies,” says Dr. Adam Jacobs, Head Doctor and Owner of SF Custom Chiropractic. “Often overlooked however, is the extra weight piled into students’ backpacks causing unnecessary stress on the spine. At a young age it is important that the additional weight carried in backpacks doesn’t cause a negative impact on posture which can result in permanent damage.”

The American Occupational Therapy Association recommends students carry backpacks no heavier than 15% of their body weight, meaning a student weighing 100 pounds should carry a backpack weighing no more than 15 pounds. However, according to the American Chiropractic Association, a recent study conducted in Italy found that the average child carries a backpack equivalent to a 39 pound burden for 176 pound man or a 29 pound load for a 132 pound woman. Additionally, in 2004, a UC Newsroom study reported 64% of American students age 11-15 experienced back pain from carrying backpacks.

Back pain among students can be prevented with knowledge about proper backpack alignment, appropriate weight allowance and awareness of good posture. If detected early, posture imbalances and scoliosis can also be reduced or eliminated through treatments offered at SF Custom Chiropractic. That said, because Scoliosis is often found in the adolescent and teen years it is important for students to be regularly examined as chiropractic care can reduce the angle of deformity and slow progression.

Dr. Jacobs will be offering a free spinal analysis and posture check to students through the month of September. Dr. Jacobs can administer chiropractic treatments and offer knowledge to ensure students’ backs are in correct alignment, which can help to safely distribute the weight of the backpacks.
