Malecare Prostate Cancer Support

"Finding a great support group, like Malecare, where gay men can talk freely and safely about cancer, was just as import to me as finding a great doctor."

Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) September 05, 2012

Malecare Cancer Support will be facilitating two sessions of its groundbreaking gay men with prostate cancer support group series at the Prostate Cancer Research Institute's annual conference, on September 7, 8 and 9, at the Marriott Los Angeles Airport Hotel. This conference attracts almost a thousand prostate cancer patients and their family members to hear talks by top oncologists from across America.

"Gay men diagnosed with prostate cancer are often left out of most all conversations about survivorship and treatment choices, particularly around social and sexual quality of life," says Darryl Mitteldorf, LCSW, an oncology social worker who has facilitated gay men's cancer groups since 1997. "The stigma and fear that the more heterosexual groups present disappears when gay and bisexual men can meet in safety and speak freely. We are please that PCRI recognizes the value of gay men's cancer support and invited Malecare to facilitate these two groups," said Mr. Mitteldorf.

"Finding a great support group, like Malecare, where gay men can talk freely and safely about cancer, was just as import to me as finding a great doctor," said 55 year old William B., a gay man diagnosed with prostate cancer last year.

William explained, "Being able to connect with men like me, without the burden of having to explain or justify who I am, helps me find the strength to fight my cancer."

Malecare is the first national cancer nonprofit to provide gay men's support in the United States. Mr Mitteldorf, who is Malecare's Executive Director, hopes to find a group leader in the Los Angeles area who might facilitate a more permanent gay men with prostate cancer meeting. There are no Los Angeles gay men's cancer groups that Malecare can recommend. Malecare hopes to start a safe and helpful group going for gay men with prostate cancer in Los Angeles and invites interested people to sign up at http://malecare.org/la/

Registration is still open for the PCRI conference...simply sign up at http://www.prostate-cancer.org/pcricms/node/376 .
