PDT, a leading product development firm, has worked with HumanToolz to create the first and only iPad stand to provide viewing at any angle on any surface in landscape or portrait mode. The project has exceeded its funding goal on Kickstarter with $85,000 from more than 335 backers with four days to go.
To create a premium iPad stand, HumanToolz worked with PDT, whose work has been recognized with awards from the Industrial Designers Society of America and The Consumer Electronics Association.
“A better iPad stand would make it easy to watch movies on the sofa, read in bed, work on an airplane tray table or lead a client presentation – no more clumsiness. We’d want it to be sleek and minimal, and to work with the Apple Smart Cover. Plus it had to protect our iPad and be ultra-lightweight,” said PDT Program Manager Gilberto Cavada, who led the design process for PDT. “The HumanToolz mobile stand meets all the criteria, and weighs in at just 2.5 ounces.”
PDT used the same hinge technology found on MacBook Air notebooks to create the Mobile Stand’s built-in kickstand. The stand is cast from a single piece of aluminum in a finish that matches the back of the iPad.
“We built the iPad stand we’ve always wanted,” said Brett Faulk, co-founder of HumanToolz in Cypress, Texas. “Based on the overwhelming response from the Kickstarter community, it looks like the HumanToolz Mobile Stand is what many iPad users have desired for some time.”
Stands for iPad 2 and 3 are available for pre-order on Kickstarter through this Sunday, September 9, 2012, for an early-bird price of $65 including shipping, with deliveries in October and November 2012. Quantity discounts are available for orders of two or more. One Kickstarter funder at the $10,000 level will visit PDT’s studios in Chicago to work with PDT designers and the HumanToolz team on ideas for next year’s Mobile Stand.
After September 9, HumanToolz will extend for a limited time the Kickstarter campaign price of $65 at http://www.HumanToolz.com until its release. Stands will be available on Amazon.com once production begins in late October.
