PrestoBox was established in April 2012 by a group of passionate brand believers who understood the disruptive power of technology. Elicia Putnam, CEO, formulated the idea for PrestoBox out of years of running a regional agency where she developed a highly collaborative branding methodology. However, the process was too expensive for most small businesses and too labor intensive to scale. As an active investor in Portland’s startup scene through Angel Oregon and Oregon Angel Fund, Elicia studied many businesses with breakthrough ideas. PrestoBox is her breakthrough idea to automate branding. Silicon Valley has a saying “Software eats the world” – automating what used to seem impossible. PrestoBox is proving “Software eats branding.”
“We are thrilled to launch PrestoBox and create an affordable, easy and fun software service to solve the challenge of small business branding,” Elicia comments. “We believe in brands and we believe that every company of every size should have one.”
Elicia partnered with Sara Conte, fellow investor and entrepreneur, to explore the business concept early in 2012. They filed a provisional patent and began developing the concept in earnest. Michael Verdine, a well-known local designer, was recruited to head up the creative team. Michael was running a design firm, Opolis, that gained national recognition for its branding work for Nike, adidas, and Dr. Martens. Clay Givens, an engineer with 12 years of experience with tech giants like Yahoo, Hewlett Packard and Hot Jobs was recruited to develop the software.
Over the summer the algorithm behind the Brand Genie was tested with over 25 small businesses. The results were encouraging: 100% of the participants called the process “easy and fun”; 89% called it “logical”. One small business commented, “Excellent process; uncanny results.
