From Charlotte to Copenhagen: Amara and PBS Translate the DNC Convention in Eight Languages

With 600 volunteers and growing, Amara and PBS are reducing accessibility barriers by translating keynote political speeches.

At this year’s Democratic National Convention (DNC), delegates and supporters aren’t the only individuals listening to speeches from top party leaders, such as President Obama. Amara, a crowd sourced subtitling platform that engages volunteers from around the world to translate online videos, has partnered with the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) to translate each DNC speech into multiple languages.

The PBS NewsHour Open Vote 2012 Subtitling Team is comprised of nearly 600 volunteers who are currently translating each DNC speech into languages ranging from Chinese to German in a matter of 24 hours. Last week, Amara and PBS engaged volunteers to translate 10 speeches from the Republican National Convention, which can be found by clicking here.

“This week, the world’s eyes are on Charlotte, N.C., as Democrats rally to re-elect President Obama,” said Nicholas Reville, chief executive officer of Amara. “Until this year, hearing-impaired and international spectators did not have full access to America’s political convention speeches. At Amara, we’re proud to partner with PBS to translate the 2012 party conventions, and share one of our country’s most vibrant displays of democracy with the world.”

“This is one of the primary missions of public media - making content as widely accessible as possible,” said Hari Sreenivasan, correspondent for PBS NewsHour. “Amara is allowing people to participate in the political conversation regardless of whether English is their first language. They're able to hear a diverse range of voices from around the country and see what makes this country great, what makes this election important and why the negative advertisements don't represent America.”

PBS and Amara began partnering in January 2012 with a goal of translating political-themed videos for hearing-impaired and foreign language audiences.
