Omega 3 is beneficial for every age and stage of development, but it’s especially beneficial for little learners. A University of Maryland Medical Centre study reported, “Omega-3 fatty acids are highly concentrated in the brain and appear to be important for cognitive (brain memory and performance) and behavioral function.”

Today’s families are smarter than ever when it comes to taking charge of their health. Omega-3 is called an “essential” fatty acid because we need it to stay healthy. Because our bodies can’t produce Omega 3 fatty acids, they must be acquired from outside sources, such as diet and supplements. The 3 essential Omega 3 fatty acids are Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA), Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA).

Alpha Linolenic Acid is found only in plants with common sources being flax, flax seed and chia. Although an essential Omega 3, ALA does not carry with it the same level of health benefits as DHA and EPA.

DHA and EPA are found in fish only, which is why they are often called fish oil supplements. Small cold-water fish, such as anchovies, sardines, and mackerel, have the highest concentrations of EPA and DHA. DHA and EPA are key nutrients in the brain and central nervous system, and cardiovascular health.

Therefore in order to maintain optimal health, it is important to consume DHA and EPA as part of our regular diet. Since most people do not consume enough fish in their diet to supply healthy levels of EPA and DHA, we need to supplement our diet with these in order to maintain our health.

Essential fatty acids are proven to have health-related benefits for every life stage, especially for babies and children as they develop. Omega 3s are not only important for keeping kids healthy, but for developing brain and eye health two critical area’s when it comes to hitting the classroom!

“While the benefits of Omega 3 fats for mental development in infancy is often reported, a 2012 study published in Neurology also found that a diet lacking in Omega 3 fatty acids as we get older may cause your brain to age faster and lose some of its memory and thinking abilities,” says registered dietician, Jackie McKenzie.

The benefits of Omega 3’s also go beyond childhood. For adults, omegas are strongly associated with a lowered risk of heart attack and stroke, due to lower cholesterol and blood pressure and have anti-inflammatory properties that can help to provide relief from conditions that affect the joints, like arthritis.
