Haiku is the ancient poetic form that usually consists of three short lines adding up to seventeen syllables. The more formal construction is a strict 5 - 7 - 5 form, but any poem of no more nor less than seventeen syllables can be called a Haiku poem.
For his Morgan Freeman video, which went viral this summer, Jim Meskimen had the beloved actor recite the following:
They say I could read the phone book
But I think
You would beg me to stop.
Did it help Obama
That I played a black president?
In the video “Christopher Walken Haiku”, Meskimen, as Walken, in an idyllic asian garden environment recites:
My teeth feel longer...
Surely they are not, really.
Weird... weird sensation.
“I do these videos both as a follow up to my viral “Shakespeare in Celebrity Voices”, and also to promote my one-man impressions show, JIMPRESSIONS,” said Meskimen. “There are apparently lots of people out there who love to watch impressionists, and I’m trying to keep a steady supply of new material flowing out to keep them happy.”
How’s he doin’?
“He’s been called the greatest impressionist of these times...” So began a recent interview with Meskimen by NPR’s Scott Simon, apparently one of those people who love to hear a good celebrity impression.
“I was so excited to be interviewed on NPR by Scott because I knew it would give me the chance to whip out my Robert Seigel impression on the air. The host cracked up, and Robert Seigel sent me a very kind email about it, too.”
The Australian Today Show called Meskimen“The World’s Greatest Impressionist” after he visited Sydney last year and dusted off his Robert Deniro impression.
Meskimen’s Deniro’s Haiku? Here’s a taste of Bobby D’s version of the poetic form he thinks “originated in Italy...”
Sometimes people ask
“You talking to me?”
Like I never heard that one.
I gained fifty pounds
For Raging Bull
Would Meryl Streep do that? Nuh uh.
Traded my ass in
For Leo DiCaprio.
