Potential Stryker hip recall lawsuits are actively being evaluated by the team of Stryker hip lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP. On July 6, 2012, Stryker Orthopeadics issued a voluntary recall of its Rejuvenate and ABG II modular-neck hip stems – components used in many of the company’s hip implant systems.* Approximately 20,000 of the recalled devices were sold in the United States. According to the company, the recall was initiated due to elevated risks of “fretting and/or corrosion at or about the modular-neck junction, which may result in adverse local tissue reactions manifesting with pain and/or swelling.” Within a month, the first Stryker hip recall lawsuit was filed in New Jersey Superior Court, Bergen County.** The plaintiff filing the Stryker hip recall lawsuit alleges that the Rejuvenate modular-neck stem shed metal debris into her bloodstream, causing her to develop metal ion poisoning from fretting and corrosion of the device. In addition to undergoing revision surgery, the plaintiff alleges complications such as pseudotumors, bone necrosis, and soft tissue problems due to metallosis.

“Unlike many of the other metal hip implant cases, the metallosis in these cases results from fretting at the stem and neck junction rather than from friction between a metal ball and a metal cup. Accordingly, a recipient of the recalled Stryker hip implant may have a ceramic ball and still develop metal ion poisoning,” commented Bernstein Liebhard LLP partner Jeffrey S. Grand, who serves on the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee in In re: DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. Pinnacle Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation (“MDL No. 2244”), a consolidated litigation involving more than 2,500 cases against another manufacturer of metal hip implants currently underway in federal court.
