NVISION Laser Eye Centers Outlines the Benefits of Cataract Surgery

New study from Brown University says elderly patients may be up to 28% less likely to fall after having cataract surgery.

A new study by the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, of more than a million Medicare patients, found those who had cataract surgery to remove vision-impairing cataracts were less likely to suffer hip fractures from a fall. (Published in The Journal of the American Medical Association.) Fall related injuries cost the U.S. more than $10 billion in 2000.

“This is great news for my patients as well as others,” says Dr. Jonathan Pirnazar who performs cataract surgery in Laguna Hills for NVISION Laser Eye Center. “Cataract surgery not only improves my patients’ vision but can also boost their self-esteem and quality of life. Reducing their risk of breaking their hip is an added bonus.”

According to Dr. Pirnazar, a cataract is the clouding of the eye’s natural lens. As a normal part of aging, the eye’s natural lens starts to lose its flexibility and starts crystallizing, which causes impaired vision.

“With laser cataract surgery, a cataract surgeon is able to create a corneal incision and then insert a miniature ultrasound tube to remove the crystallized natural lens. Through the same incision, the cataract surgeon will then insert a new artificial lens that helps restore the patient’s vision. This replacement lens is called an intraocular lens, or IOL,” says Dr. Pirnazar.

“Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed surgeries in the U.S. today with more than three million procedures a year. Most patients can see some improvement in their vision the same day,” says Dr. Pirnazar.
