Honda will sell a plug-in hybrid version of its Accord car in 2014. The overall design is based on the company‘s recently updated midsize sedan. Key features of the upcoming plug-in include a continuously variable transmission, a 124-kw electric motor, a 2-liter, 4-cylinder combustion engine with 137 hp, and direct, electric propulsion of its front wheels. With a total driving range, utilizing gasoline and electric power, the plug-in Accord will be able to travel 500 miles, though is capable of a maximum electric-only range of 15 miles. .

Mitsubishi Outlander SUV Plug-in

This month’s Paris Motor Show will be the venue for Mitsubishi‘s unveiling of its Outlander SUV plug-in hybrid. The company’s official designation for the car is ‘Outlander PHEV.’ It features a pair of electric motors powered by a 12 kWh lithium ion battery pack. Unique to the new model is placement of the two electric units, with one on each axle. The SUV’s combustion engine is a 2-liter, 4-cylinder, which allows for combined driving range of 550 miles. Electric-only range for the Outlander PHEV is 34 miles. The Japanese automaker based much of the new model’s technology on electrical systems from its i-MiEV all-electric car.
