YCIS Beijing places strong emphasis on the acquisition of the Chinese language (Putonghua), an increasingly important world language. In order to foster a deeper understanding of the language, students are also required to study Chinese culture. YCIS offer a co-teaching environment, with one native English-language teacher and one native Chinese-language teacher in the classroom at all times. This ensures that Chinese language becomes part of daily life for the students, to the extent that it goes beyond just the language ability, and extends into benefits such as deeply understanding and respecting cultures.

The fundamental process of YCIS putting equal focus on both Chinese and English language is crucial when promoting the learning and understanding of both eastern and western cultures. Having an understanding of both these cultures empowers the children with an understanding of cross cultural value systems and cultural behavioral traits that are very highly valued in business.

YCIS Beijing implemented this teaching methodology by presenting YCIS Beijing Primary school students with the fantastic opportunity of improving their Mandarin language skills with a generous emphasis on oral and reading skills. Throughout the month of May 2012, the Primary Chinese Department held a series of Chinese reading activities for students in each level of Chinese. For Year 1-6 Chinese as a First Language (CFL) students, a “Classic Poetry Reading” was held, with particular emphasis on famous and traditional Chinese stories and poems. Students studying Chinese as an additional language (CAL) performed “Hip Hop Mandarin”, in which Chinese dialog and Chinese songs were the key focus.

The success of the Chinese Programme at YCIS proves the benefits of a bilingual education model are vast and the rapid rate at which the young YCIS students are learning can only build to a bright future. Learning languages through songs and poems is a great approach to educate children in an entertaining and interactive way while also achieving the principal aim of helping students to recognise and remember Chinese words and characters.
