Youngstown, OH (PRWEB) September 20, 2012

With more than a million Americans living with ostomies – some 100,000 undergo life-saving ostomy surgery each year – the collective voices of patients, their families, friends and caregivers could create a deafening roar. But ostomies – surgically created openings in the body for the discharge of body wastes – aren’t the types of surgeries most people talk about.

That’s unfortunate, says Anna Fitzgerald, enterostomal therapy nurse and founder of the Youngstown Area Ostomy Support Group, because open, informative conversation enhances understanding, which has a direct and positive effect on the quality of life of individuals who’ve undergone this life-saving surgery. To help educate and enhance public awareness about ostomy surgery and the challenges patients encounter, the Youngstown Area Ostomy Support Group will join the United Ostomy Associations of America, the Canadian Ostomy Association, the International Ostomy Association and ostomy associations throughout the world in celebrating World Ostomy Day and Ostomy Awareness Day Oct. 6.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Let’s be heard” and its goal is to raise awareness and promote the active, rewarding lives made possible by this life-saving surgery. For more information, call 330.480.3440.

The Youngstown Area Ostomy Support Group meets once a month at alternating locations in Trumbull and Mahoning counties. The meeting is free and open to ostomy patients, families and friends.
