“In building the new SMSP certification, CompTIA’s for profit subsidiary, Examplify is leveraging the proven exam expertise and processes of CompTIA” - Bryan Kainrath VP, Examplify

The Ultimate Knowledge Institute (UKI), a leading information technology and information security training organization with over 25,000 trained professionals, responds to market demands for social media security standards by introducing a new training and certification program: The Social Media Security Professional (SMSP) Certification. Powered by CompTIA, this new certification recognizes an individual's ability to mitigate social networking risks and respond to security incidents. Certified professionals will help guide the development of organizational social media personnel security policy.
The SMSP Beta Exam, developed by CompTIA’s for-profit subsidiary Examplify, will be available starting September 17, 2012. Candidates can prepare for the exam by attending an official social media security training course, or they can opt to challenge the exam without official training.
“We conducted extensive research and found that organizations are struggling to properly secure their critical information from social media hackers, and there is a startling lack of professionals with expertise in identifying and mitigating social media security risks.” said Dr. Scott A. Wells, UKI co-founder. “Businesses and government agencies around the world are becoming increasingly aware of the risks involved in social networking, and are looking for experts with verified skills to help them accomplish business objectives by protecting the organizations’ core assets.”
The growing concerns over social media security are reflected in a 2012 RIMS Benchmark Survey, where 60 percent of risk managers identified social media as both an asset and a liability to their organization. According to the 2011 Barracuda Labs report Social Networking Security & Privacy, 86 percent of respondents fear that employee use of social media networks can endanger company security. Furthermore, in a recently published Gartner report, 60 percent of corporations revealed that they plan to monitor social media channels by 2015 to minimize security breaches.
“Having a current and diversified set of skills that differentiates one from peers is important in order to excel in today’s complex risk landscape and become an indispensable part of the infosec team.” said Tony Akers, UKI co-founder. “UKI’s strong training development background combined with CompTIA’s experience in exam development offer a credible and reliable way to validate the skills of individuals taking the exams in the exploding IT arena of social media.”
“In building the new SMSP certification, CompTIA’s for profit subsidiary, Examplify is leveraging the proven exam expertise and processes of CompTIA, which has been developing industry-standard, vendor-neutral IT certifications for 20 years,” said Bryan Kainrath, vice president, Examplify. “From exam development and test delivery, to exam maintenance and ISO process guidance, Examplify is committed to providing exams of the highest quality, relevance and accuracy. With the SMSP certification, we want organizations to feel assured that their certified IT staff know how to manage the security threats presented by social media.”
The SMSP certification was designed for IT professionals in job functions such as information security, systems and network administrators, security architects and engineers, and any other information security role.
Individuals who take the SMSP beta exam will help determine the passing score for the SMSP certification through their participation, and will be eligible to obtain the certification upon successful completion of the exam. The beta phase is expected to be finalized before the end of October 2012, and the exam is scheduled to be in the market January 2013.
