Halloween shopping is a fun time of year. However for one retailer, the in-store experience is just no longer profitable.
"We used to have seasonal brick and mortar stores to help give the walk-in customers a better idea of what they are getting. However, the model is sometimes a gamble and just not profitable. Also, there are limited discounts that can be given to the brick and mortar environment." - David Scarpitta of Das Cheap Inc.
As long standing brick and mortar retail locations feel the economic crunch of discount Halloween costume retailers online, many companies now choose to only operate online to reduce expenses and compete in the marketplace.
"What we noticed is that users would shop the costume that they were looking for in-store, and ultimately buy their Halloween costumes online. Therefore ultimately making our seasonal store an overpaid showroom. When you factor in the expenses of keeping the lights on, paying people to be there to stock shelves and build displays, this cuts into the overall prices that we need to charge." - David Scarpitta
Many local retail stores have moved their unprofitable operations to the online space.
"It just so happens that the economy has driven away the social shopping experience, though here at DasCheap we have transitioned that experience online as well with Halloween costume videos, action shots, and of course the ability to get a minimum 30-40% discount as compared to as if you had purchased these items at a retail location." - David Scarpitta
