SMB Nation Reviews Symform Cloud Storage Service

SMB Nation, a leading SMB technology channel events and media company, has published a review of Symform, a “data center-less” cloud storage network.

Skype may have been the technology service that brought distributed computing to the masses, but Symform may very well be the company that sparks awareness of distributed storage. In the wake of Symform’s new “bytes or bucks” cloud storage service plan, SMB Nation has published a review of Symform’s service aimed at educating the SMB channel about the company’s alternative—and arguably more secure—approach to cloud storage.

The Symform Global Storage Network consists of thousands of Internet-connected devices—many of them almost constantly available servers and NAS devices—that host Symform users’ data. When data uploads to the Symform cloud, each data block is broken into 64 256-bit AES encrypted fragments that are redundantly distributed among 96 different storage nodes. When users access their data across the network, Symform’s Cloud Control software almost instantly reassembles that data, providing a performance level comparable to other leading cloud storage services.

Up until today, Symform allowed users to earn up to 200 GB of free cloud storage by donating some of their own Internet-connected local storage. However, servers, network-attached storage devices, and some other high-end business storage devices required additional licensing fees. With Symform’s new “bytes or bucks” service, the company has eliminated all of their software license fees. Customers can now donate local storage on a 2:1 basis for storage credit on the Symform network, or they can pay a flat fee of $0.15 per GB. Customers can also take a hybrid approach, paying for their storage allotment through a combination of bytes and bucks.

Symform is a sponsor of this year’s 10th annual SMB Nation fall conference, which will explore how cloud computing, virtualization, Windows 8, Server 2012, and other emerging technology are affecting the SMB IT space. SMB Nation will be held in Las Vegas at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino on October 12-14. See for more details.
