Beverly Hills parathyroid expert Babak Larian, MD, DACS, recently performed a parathyroidectomy under local anesthesia at La Peer Health Systems surgery center. Although this type of procedure is generally performed under general anesthesia, Dr. Larian uses a targeted approach which allows him to safely perform the surgery under local anesthesia. This, in turn, allows the procedure to be performed with little discomfort.

The patient in question was originally seen by a neurologist in regards to kidney stones, but the physician quickly noticed high calcium levels. As a result, the neurologist sent the patient to see Dr. Larian.

Dr. Larian used ultrasound to locate what proved to be a parathyroid tumor the day before the actual surgery. Because of his targeted approach to locating the tumor, the procedure could be safely and successfully performed using local anesthesia.

“Whenever it is possible, I prefer operating under local anesthesia as it reduces operative time, and makes re covert much easier for the patients. Because most patients will leave the surgery center within hours of surgery, it also has cost-saving potential for the patient,” says Dr.Larian.

Prior to the parathyroid surgery, Dr. Larian performed an ultrasound to help pinpoint the abnormal parathyroid gland location. A small (half inch) incision was made, and the abnormal parathyroid gland was removed. The parathyroid hormone blood test was then measured to confirm that the patient was cured, while the wound was closed up. Because of his unique approach, Dr. Larian will know if the patient is cured at the same time.

“In my experience, patients are generally very happy with the experience, and have very little recall of the actual procedure, as well as not having to deal with issues of recovery from general anesthesia” says Dr. Larian.
