We now have an operational platform that will support the global growth of our business and an infrastructure to implement SAP in Asia Pacific.

Electrocomponents plc (LSE:ECM), the world’s leading high service distributor of electronics and maintenance products, has been named a finalist in the prestigious UK IT Industry Awards in the ‘Data Centre Project of the Year’ category.

The chosen project was created to provide Electrocomponents with a world class IT system to support the Group’s ambitious growth plans. The project team, comprising 120 IT staff from across the globe, had to address two core areas: transform the data centre platform to ensure flexibility; and upgrade the ageing SAP platform to ensure system readiness for SAP implementation across Asia Pacific, bringing the region in line with the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region and the US.

Working in conjunction with SAP and Atos, the team successfully implemented a new approach that utilised SAP’s upgrade factory and ‘near zero downtime’ service (NZDT). This was the first use of this process to upgrade SAP in the UK. The project was developed and delivered in 10 months with minimal disruption in service to both customers and the business. The new data centre platform has already helped to increase end-user satisfaction and guarantees cost savings of £2.3m per year as a result of having moved away from the CAPEX investment model.

Phil Cook, Global IT Director, Electrocomponents, comments: “We are extremely pleased to be shortlisted as a finalist. This is testament to the hard work and dedication of the team in this massive undertaking. We now have an operational platform that will support the global growth of our business and an infrastructure to implement SAP in Asia Pacific. In addition, improvements made to our eCommerce engine and our supply chain capability will give our 1m+ customers a consistent online experience across the world.”

David Clarke MBE, Chief Executive Officer, BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, says: “Congratulations to the finalists; they can be proud of their achievements in reaching this stage of our prestigious awards. Through the awards we aim to demonstrate not only the innovation and professionalism of those working in IT but also the importance of IT in delivering business and social benefit.”

Stuart Sumner, Editor of Computing, comments: “I would like to congratulate the finalists. The UK IT Industry Awards are rigorously judged and to be announced as a finalist is a great achievement.”
