Orlando, FL (PRWEB) September 11, 2012

G&T Conveyor Company, the largest American owned and privately held turnkey baggage handling systems manufacturer in the United States, is pleased to announce it has successfully completed the Remote Screening Facility Improvements Project at the Orlando International Airport. As one of Florida’s major traffic hubs, Orlando International is the second busiest airport in Florida and ranks 13th in the United States in passenger traffic.

State-of-the-art Baggage Handling System Designed for Florida Vacationers
As part of the airport’s extensive development and renovation plans to increase efficiency and capacity, G&T was selected to design, engineer, manufacture and install the new baggage handling system for the remote screening facility project. G&T also served as the prime contractor for the building construction, supervising Hardin Construction.

The 69,000 square foot facility handles both the inbound and outbound baggage delivered to and from major tourist and resort locations throughout central Florida. One of the major users of the system is Disney’s Resorts and Cruise Ships.

The system features 2,580 linear feet of conveyor, 4 L-3 Examiner EDS machines, 3 slope plate make-up devices, 116 queue conveyors, 13 G&T power face diverters and 7 G&T vertical sorters. The new, robust baggage handling system serves eight airlines, with an integrated 100% Hold Baggage Screening and fully automated sorting of departures and transfer baggage.

John Cottrell, G&T Vice President and General Manager said: “The open line of communication between owner and contractor is the key for success of any construction project. This project is a result of effective, direct communication between Greater Orlando Airport Authority (GOAA), G&T and our Team. I am very proud of how our Team, lead by Ted Dreaver, responded to a changing environment that is inherent with a design-build project of this kind. We are pleased to be a major part of this successful frontier in the area off site baggage handling systems operations.”

G&T Implemented Own Controls and Software
G&T also designed and implemented its own controls / software for the entire system. Unequivocally important, the “brains” of the system lay in the controls / software integration. G&T’s controls/software solved the complex challenges of the system occupying a compact space with diverse speed changes, from bags being slowed for screening and speed up for sorting. Another unique application of G&T’s controls/software is the ability of the remote facility to interface with the main terminal 1.5 miles away.

G&T Software Engineering Manager Lyn Johnson said, “The remote facility interfaces with the terminal. In fact, the entire facility can be run from the terminal, which is pretty unique. Being able to monitor the conveyor system from the main terminal and being able to make changes on the fly from a remote location, this is a first of its kind.”

The system also passed the Transportation Security Administration’s integrated site acceptance test on the first run, a rarity in the baggage industry. G&T has now implemented its own controls/software in various airports in the United States, including Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International, San Diego International, Philadelphia International, Southwest Florida International and Minneapolis-St. Paul International.

Enhanced Customer Service
With bags being transported from the resort directly to the remote screening facility, airlines can plan more efficiently and effectively results in fewer misplaced bags, at the same time airports save money by freeing up precious real estate by moving operations outside the terminal. For travelers, the system makes it possible to skip the time consuming baggage checking process. In the end, the passenger, the airport and the airlines experience smooth baggage flows and an improved passenger experience.
