Safer Cribs

In its ongoing support of high quality early childhood care and education, Educational First Steps (EFS) has purchased and will distribute 244 safety-compliant cribs to its over ninety assisted preschools and early childhood centers in at risk North Texas communities. The purchase, from San Antonio-based Totstock, was in response to improved federal safety standards that, beginning June 28, 2011 will apply to all crib sizes, prohibiting the manufacture or sale of traditional drop-side rail cribs, strengthening crib slats and mattress supports, improving the quality of hardware and requiring more rigorous product testing.

Since these amended requirements also apply to cribs currently in use at child care centers, EFS’ help lifts a significant financial burden and ongoing licensing requirement from the disadvantaged child care centers in its program. More importantly, it provides more secure care for the hundreds of infants served by its assisted centers.

EFS received grants from the Harold Simmons Foundation and the Hamon Charitable Foundation to facilitate the purchase.

Providing these cribs is an essential part of Educational First Steps’ mission of increasing the quality and availability of education from infancy through early childhood for the more diverse, vulnerable and under-represented populations of North Texas. “We are so happy to provide these cribs which can only better infant safety and care among our partners,” said EFS Executive Director John R. Breitfeller. “EFS’ work toward accreditation by its assisted centers is founded on our unique ‘Four Steps to Excellence 2.0’ program, which addresses both educational and physical facility characteristics with a flexibility that respects the circumstances, dignity and resources of each assisted child care center,” Breitfeller said.
