On September 13, 2012, online marketing company fishbat looked at the stream of tweets being broadcasted through Twitter by the NYPD and praised their ability to use social media as a memorial for the police officers that were lost on September 11th eleven years ago.
According to an initial report by the New York Post, the NYPD had begun to post tweets to commemorate each of the fallen officers from 9/11, beginning on September 8, 2012 and leading into September 11th. Each tweet lists the officer’s rank, name, precinct and end of duty date. The tweets are unified under the common hash tag, #neverforget. The NYPD’s new Facebook and Twitter accounts have been primarily used to broadcast brief arrest reports, wanted reports and security tips prior to this.
Justin Maas, VP of Client Relations at fishbat, commented on this honorable initiative used by the NYPD. “This is a great and respectable way for social media to be used to honor the brave men and women of the NYPD who died eleven years ago,” Maas says. “For all the people who aren’t able to physically be at the Twin Towers memorial, this is another way for people to pay tribute.”
According to Maas, “This is one of many ways that social media may be used in an honest and respectable manner for social activism or to remember those lost during times of tragedy. Twitter and Facebook can be about much more than just giving mundane status updates.” Maas continues stating, “In the case of the NYPD’s tweets, it can be used to serve a higher purpose and recognize heroes who deserve to be remembered.”
