On the eleventh anniversary of September 11, 2001, Spartan Race founder Joe Desena releases a poignant statement on his eyewitness account of the World Trade Center attacks and his constant efforts to keep the events of that day in mind.

On September 11, 2012, Spartan Race released a statement regarding a new post to their website, encapsulating poignant statements from Spartan Race founder, Joe Desena, on the anniversary of the terrorist attacks that took place on American soil eleven years ago. Desena, who worked in an office building across the street from the World Trade Center, revisits his personal experiences from the September 11th attacks.

According to Desena, “I pressed my hands up against the glass, everyone screamed… and then it was just…silent.” Desena continued by stating, “That day changed everything, but there were other changes that came from it. People were looking one another in the eye again. People were remembering how it felt to be human. And we can never forget what happened that day.” Desena states that the race itself seeks to honor the commitment of the men and women of the military as well as the victims of September 11th.

The blog post on the Spartan Race website goes on to speak of the support of the military that the race has practiced since its inception. Carrie Adams, writer for Spartan Race, comments, “There is always more we can do, because the fight continues every day. The fight to preserve liberty, to honor the fallen, to move forward with grace and deliberation; all the while never forgetting where we’ve been and what’s been given to get here. And at Spartan Race HQ we remember September 11th and we are recommitted to changing lives for the better with our race series, giving back where we can.”

As Spartan Race and the rest of the world moves forward and remembers the tragic events of September 11, 2001, Desena states, “We can’t let it break us. Never quit. Never surrender.”
