FCC cell phone radiation standards are outdated compared to standards of international regulatory agencies.
New York, NY (PRWEB) September 11, 2012
Cell phone radiation is suspected to be the cause of rock star Sheryl Crow’s benign brain tumor, Bernstein Liebhard LLP reports.* According to the Huffington Post, during an interview on the new talk show Katie, Crow relayed her “theory that it’s possible that [the benign tumor she was diagnosed with late last year] is related to that. I [used to spend] hours on the old archaic cell phones.” Crow, whose tumor is located in a part of her brain near where she often held her cell phone, says she “started to suspect something was wrong when she began spacing out on stage, forgetting lyrics and generally feeling ‘mushy.’” In 2011, the World Health Organization (“WHO”) reclassified cell phone radiation as “possibly carcinogenic,” while numerous studies have found that prolonged cell phone radiation exposure may put individuals at an increased risk for certain types of brain tumors, such as glioma, acoustic neuroma, and meningioma. Crow was diagnosed with meningioma last year.
“Ms. Crow’s ‘theory’ linking prolonged cell phone use to brain tumors is in fact supported by many studies and the lawsuits against cell phone manufacturers concerning these injuries continue to move forward,” said Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing individuals alleging injuries as a result of cell phone radiation exposure. The Firm is currently part of a small consortium of law firms leading the litigation against cell phone manufacturers, alleging that manufacturers failed to adequately warn users about the dangers of cell phone radiation.
Cell Phone Radiation Safety Concerns Growing
On June 15, 2012, the Federal Communications Commission (“FCC”) submitted a proposal to reevaluate cell phone radiation emission standards.** Thereafter, an August 7, 2012 report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office (“GAO”) found that FCC cell phone radiation standards are outdated compared to standards of international regulatory agencies.*** The current levels may fail to reflect the most recent research on cell phone radiation, and may not identify the maximum exposure that most users are subject to. According to a recent article published in Bloomberg Businessweek dissecting the findings of the GAO report, the U.S. currently has approximately 286 million cell phone subscribers, including an increasing number of children. This widespread use of cell phones makes cell phone radiation an even greater concern.****
Individuals who experienced cell phone side effects such as certain types of tumors or cancers may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering and more.
