Coast2Coast Rx announced today the two-year anniversary of the free prescription discount program in Placer County, where residents have saved more than $693,604 since the program’s inception in August 2010. The discount card, approved by the County Board of Supervisors, has allowed residents to save $35,290 in August 2012 alone.

With prices reduced up to 75 percent and a nationwide average savings of 55 percent, the card offers significant discounts on over 60,000 brand name and generic prescription drugs. Consumers can use the card at major chain pharmacies and many independent retailers. As there is no membership paperwork or restrictions on qualifications to use the card, any Placer County resident can access these discounts regardless of age, health status, or whether they currently have an insurance plan.

“Participating in the Coast2Coast Rx program is one of many ways that local individuals and families can reduce their expenses for prescriptions and certain healthcare services,” says Dr. Richard Burton, Health Officer and Director of Health and Human Services in Placer County.

Though it provides the most significant savings to those without health insurance, the card is also a simple way for those with insurance to save on health care services or prescriptions that are not included in their coverage or carry high deductibles. In some instances the card can be used by senior citizens to offset the Medicare Part D “donut hole.” Through a partner program, the card also provides discounts for healthcare such as vision, dental and hearing services, diabetes supplies and even some pet prescriptions.

In an effort to give back to the communities it serves, the Coast2Coast Rx card differs from other prescription discount programs by providing $1.25 for each prescription filled using the card to the county for public programs. In this way, card users can help contribute to their communities while benefiting from the prescription savings. This distinctive revenue-generating feature is an added benefit of the comprehensive program.

“Our goal for the Coast2Coast Rx card is for the discounted prescription program to improve health outcomes for users—the card is a simple way for many consumers to improve the affordability of necessary prescriptions and services while simultaneously creating a revenue stream to benefit their county,” said Chief Marketing Officer Marty Dettelbach of Financial Marketing Concepts, Inc., the company that provides the cards.
