SPIE Defense, Security, and Sensing Adds New Topics for 2013

Abstract submissions are being accepted through 22 October for conference presentations at SPIE Defense, Security, and Sensing in Baltimore next spring. The only annual event of its kind on the east coast, SPIE Defense, Security, and Sensing offers more than 60 conferences and an exhibition featuring more than 500 developers and suppliers of sensing, imaging, display, and other technologies with applications in industry, the environment, defense, security, law enforcement, and related fields.

The mix of topics demonstrates both the multidisciplinary nature of optics and photonics and the spin-off benefits of technology.

SPIE Defense, Security, and Sensing will return to its new home in Baltimore, Maryland, next spring with more than 60 technical conferences focused on imaging, sensors, lasers and related topics. The event also offers professional development courses taught by leading experts, and an exhibition featuring developers and suppliers of applications such as robotics, infrared detectors, chemical sensors, high-speed imaging systems, and displays. Dates are 29 April through 3 May 2013 in the Baltimore Convention Center. Abstracts are being accepted through 22 October.

Defense, Security, and Sensing set new records in the number of technical presentations as well as exhibiting companies and exhibition visitors in its debut in Baltimore last April. Growth was due in part to the long-standing event’s new close proximity to the many government and research labs, decision makers, prime contractors, and aerospace companies in the greater Washington area.

In addition to a full range of well-established conferences in topics such as infrared systems, lidar and radar, laser technology, ISR, display technologies, unmanned systems and robotics, cyber protection, CBRNE, biometric technology for human identification, sensor data analysis, and energy harvesting and storage, the 2013 event will introduce three new conference topics:

  •     Emerging Theory, Analysis, and Design for Optical Space Communications
  •     Flexible Electronics
  •     Next-Generation Analyst.

The mix of topics demonstrates both the multidisciplinary nature of optics and photonics and the spin-off benefits of technology originally developed for security and defense applications, organizers noted. Examples of specific spin-off topics are sensing for agriculture, food quality and safety; biosensors; sensing for health and disaster response; thermal imaging and fiber optic sensing in aerospace and energy industries; ocean sensing and monitoring; and border safety.

Kenneth Israel, Major General (USAF Retired) is Symposium Chair, and David Whelan of Boeing Defense, Space, and Security is Symposium Co-Chair.

Defense, Security, and Sensing is the largest annual meeting on R&D-focused optics and photonics technologies on the East Coast offering conferences, courses, networking opportunities, and an exhibition. Dates for upcoming years are:

  •     5-9 May 2014
  •     20-24 April 2015
  •     18-22 April 2016.

Conference proceedings will be published individually in the SPIE Digital Library as soon as approved after the meeting, and also in collected print and digital volumes and collections.
