CLAC Celebrates 60th Anniversary

Nearly 800 delegates, stewards, staff, and international dignitaries, as well as a number of guests, have gathered at the Hyatt Hotel in downtown Vancouver as the Christian Labour Association of Canada (CLAC) begins its three-day National Convention and Stewards Conference.

Keynote speakers at the event include Canucks legend Trevor Linden and four-time World Champion and Olympic gold medallist Adam Kreek.

Over 500 CLAC stewards from across the country working in many sectors of the economy will take part in a number of educational seminars aimed at helping them in their role representing the union.

This year’s event celebrates CLAC’s sixtieth anniversary. The union was officially established on February 20, 1952. By 1962, CLAC had just over 1,000 members, and since then membership has more than doubled every decade.

At a time when most other unions are declining and merging, CLAC is one of the fastest growing private-sector unions in Canada. More and more Canadians are attracted to CLAC’s cooperative, partnership model of labour relations, which provides a common sense alternative to both anti-union advocates and hardline unionists.

CLAC is an independent Canadian labour union representing over 50,000 workers in a wide range of sectors―construction, health care, retail, service, transportation, manufacturing, and others. Based on principles that promote the values of respect, dignity, fairness, and integrity, CLAC’s approach to labour relations stresses membership advocacy, cooperation, and the long term interests of the workplace community.
