Consumers who buy energy-saving bulbs say that price is a big factor in their purchase decisions, according to a new study by Consumer Reports. About 75 percent of the consumers that have replaced inefficient incandescent light bulbs with energy-efficient models have chosen Compact Fluorescents (CFLs) over Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) due to the cheaper price tags.

Buying a cheaper bulb, however, does not always deliver on financial payback, light quality, fit and style. To help consumers find energy-saving bulbs with the best payback and features specific to their needs, sustainability software firm Eco Hatchery developed the free Light Bulb Finder app. The app provides consumers with instant bulb recommendations and calculates the financial payback of replacing one or more incandescents with energy-efficient equivalents. Recommendations are based on independent lighting industry reports and internal testing by Eco Hatchery.

Walking around the home or in store aisles, users input basic information about their current incandescent bulb types and fixtures and get instant recommendations for CFLs and LEDs that have the best light quality and financial payback. They can save customized shopping lists on their smartphone or tablet for easy reference while shopping at local retailers. Light Bulb Finder displays bulb prices, images and specifications, making it easy to find a match on store shelves. There also is an option to purchase recommended bulbs directly through the app.

“Making the switch to energy-saving bulbs is worth it. Replacing traditional incandescent bulbs with CFLs or LEDs can save consumers $60 to $130 in annual energy bills,” said Adam Borut, president of Eco Hatchery.

In select markets across the U.S., Light Bulb Finder users can access bulb discounts and regional energy efficiency information through the app. Eco Hatchery collaborates with utilities and cities from California to Massachusetts to help residents make the switch to energy-efficient bulbs a rewarding experience in terms of time, money and impact.

Named “Best Overall App” by the EPA in its Apps for the Environment Challenge, the Light Bulb Finder mobile app is available as a free download on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Android smartphones and tablets. To download the app, visit the app store on a mobile device and search for “Light Bulb Finder.”
