Forbes magazine has determined what residents of Dogwood Forest have known for a long time -- Atlanta is one of top five Best Places to Retire in 2012. Dogwood Forest, a community for assisted living and senior living, strongly supports the notion that a person’s living environment significantly influences his or her health and welfare.

“We know our residents enjoy being in Atlanta, GA, and its nice to see the city being nationally recognized in such a positive way,” said Al Holbrook, chairman of Trinity Lifestyles Management, the management team for Dogwood Forest communities located in Atlanta, GA.

To create their annual list of Best Places to Retire in 2012, Forbes considered data for hundreds of cities in all 50 states, plus the District of Columbia.

The Forbes list weighed affordability, weather, availability of doctors, serious crime rates and encouragement for an active retirement. Economic issues were considered for both working and non-working retirees. These factors included the cost of living, tax burden on retirees, unemployment rates and rankings of job and economic growth. Forbes also determined that Georgia is one of the best states for retirees from a tax perspective.

“Atlanta's inclusion on the list as a great place to retire is well deserved,” said Holbrook. “Atlanta offers affordable housing for baby boomers who may want to downsize, a great climate with four distinct seasons, yet mild winters. There is currently a trend towards older adults going back to school or taking continuing education courses. There are several colleges in Atlanta that offer those programs.”

According to The Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA), hundreds of thousands of seniors utilize assisted living and senior living, and this population is growing.
