Three Ontario companies have combined their resources to help fill much needed skilled trades job in Saskatchewan by training and licensing already experienced Filipino welders for their Canadian equivalency. The plan combines the experience of Peterborough Immigration Consultant Carmela Valles, Jonathan Bennett who owns and operates Canadian Welding Skills in Ennismore, Ontario and Dave Hagel of High Performance Human Resources in Burlington.
The group has formed a partnership with a welding school in Cebu, an island city of about 2 million in the Philippines, so participants there can test for a Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) license that will make them more attractive to Canadian employers using this as a benchmark. The Canadian Welding Skills Testing Centre in Cebu City is a fully CWB accredited welding test centre. It has a reputation for testing skilled welders that have worked in ship yards around South East Asia and on pipelines in the Middle East. Since its establishment early this year, the Canadian Welding Skills Test Centre has tested two times with a pool of 60 CWB licensed welders ready to take on new jobs in Canada. More testing will take place in October or November.
Hagel plans to use his expertise to bring in qualified welders from North America as well as the Philippines.
“I plan on looking at the huge pool of unemployed workers in the United States,” he said. “Ohio, Michigan, Illinois and Indiana all have folks we could recruit.”
Welders from overseas need a job offer from a Canadian employer in order to commence a work visa application from Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
