Burke Electric LLC has announced that its team has won the bid to supply turbine and generator equipment to Alaska’s Whitman Lake Hydroelectric Project. Ketchikan Public Utilities of Ketchikan, Alaska, awarded the Notice to Proceed in July 2012, followed by the initial payment in late August. The winning bid of approximately $2.8 million was submitted by the team comprised of Burke Electric LLC of Bellevue, Washington; ORENCO Hydropower of Palo Alto, California; and CF Malm Engineers LLC of Seattle, Washington.
The Whitman Lake Hydroelectric Project includes a turbine-generator package that features a 3720 kW horizontal Francis turbine, an 816 kW horizontal Francis turbine, associated synchronous generators, exciters, switchgear, electrical control systems and spare parts. The project also includes integration, design, materials and services necessary to complete the equipment manufacture and supply contract; including installation supervision, testing, start-up and commissioning.

On the Whitman Lake project, team roles are as follows:
- Burke Electric serves as the prime contractor. Burke Electric has been involved in industrial, hydroelectric, commercial and power generation construction since the late 1950s. Today they pursue this tradition by working on construction and construction management projects throughout the U.S.
- CF Malm Engineers provides switchgear and electric controls, and serves as project manager and co-system integrator. In business for over 40 years, the company is recognized as experts in the design and manufacturing of switchgear and electric controls for small hydro systems in the Western U.S., having designed and implemented over 100 small hydro projects.
- ORENCO Hydropower serves as the turbine and generator supplier. The company will design and coordinate manufacturing of the equipment, to be supplied by Hangzhou Hangfa Electrical Equipment Co., Ltd. of Hangzhou, China. The firm was established in 1956 as Hangzhou Hangfa Electrical Equipment Works (HEEW).
