Kun-Gay Yap’s new book “Reality Beyond Belief: Understanding Why You Believe What You Believe” (published by Balboa Press) explains how instincts affect the beliefs which create a person’s reality and convinces him or her those beliefs are true. “These instincts act to fulfill our individual needs for survival and lead us to unique sets of beliefs which create our unique realities,” Yap explains. “A person who becomes aware of these mechanisms can have more control of what to believe instead of being a tool of belief; such awareness of instincts allows the person to live beyond beliefs.”

Yap’s theories are rooted, unlike many books about belief, in the physical layout of the human brain. His book offers 17 sections which describe specific and critical neural constructions, explaining how each affects the creation and structure of beliefs.

An excerpt from “Reality Beyond Belief”:

“As children we recited the mantra ‘actions speak louder than words’ and as adults we abandon it as naïve, simplistic, or juvenile, losing each other and ourselves in a sea of words. Pronouncements of what we believe are made to be more important than what we are or how we live. We are what we believe. But a person’s beliefs create the person’s reality only for that believing person; we may miss the point that for anyone else, it is a person’s actions not the words that are the reality.”

“The scientific evidence and indeed our own daily observations show us to be creatures of instinct and even though we think is all about us but actually it is all about the brain,” Yap writes. “What the brain wants is often mistaken by us as what we want.”
