Union Built PC Manager Pete Marchese comments, “it’s a great convenience for just a nominal cost. All the information is right there, and phone numbers can be touch-dialed. It’s very convenient for busy staff and reps who can’t sit at a computer all day. Union Built PC is all about using new technologies to help unions and union members. “

Development Manager Barry Diederich adds that advancement in web applications technology has made a difference, “we’re excited to offer a mobile web application that has the look and feel of a native app. It looks and works like apps built for the Android, iOS, Windows Mobile or Blackberry platforms, but it works on all of those devices.”

“The native platforms were cost prohibitive in most cases, especially since people in an organization have different kinds of phones, different platforms and versions. But now that we’re nearing maturity of the new HTML5 standard, the mobile web is a great option, and there are new tools that take advantage of that. Now we’re able to make a web app that’s good on any smart phone.”

The HTML5 standard has been in development since 2009 and is scheduled to be fully implemented as the standard for all devices by 2014. Desktop browsers are catching up slowly, but due to their short life-cycles, smart phones support the essential parts the new standard already. As a result, mobile web technology is quickly catching up to the more cumbersome native development platforms.

Grievance Manager mobile uses the new standards and technologies to interact with a database without reloading pages as to avoid the slow page loading seen in typical mobile sites. As a result, Grievance Manager mobile is fast, easy to navigate and user-friendly. These advances are making mobile web development competitive with native, but mobile web is much more cost-effective.

“Now we can offer mobile without having to test on 70+ devices like the big native app developers do,” says Diederich.

“And we can push out a change without going through an app store and making people install it.”
