One has only to turn on the television or read a newspaper to note the growing polarization of American society. The new book “Divided We Fall: Exploring the Keys to American Unity, Survival, and Prosperity” (published by iUniverse) offers readers one path toward restoring unity and civility to U.S. discourse.
“The virtues of civility and harmony are seeping out of our society,” author William W. Robé notes. “Extremism has replaced reasonableness. Each passing year the outlook for a bright and prosperous future becomes less likely as we divide into opposing forces. Unless we can restore mutual respect and understanding of others we will tear each other apart and in so doing we will destroy our great country and our form of government.”
Robé, who spent more than 40 years in the service of his country, is deeply disturbed by the lack of harmony within the halls of government. Social, economic, and demographic changes pose challenges, but Tea Party activists, Wall Street occupiers, he says, are only making the problems worse.
Robe’s primary drive in writing “Divided We Fall” is to arrest what he sees as a terminal decline in American values. “If the country’s citizens remain divided, democracy will collapse,” he says, “It won’t be because of an invading army; it will be because of internal strife. Even so, it’s not too late to rekindle the light of freedom through unity.”
