Walking 10,000 steps per day has been shown to reduce the risk of initial heart attacks by 90% and stroke by 70% in previous studies.

Cardiovascular disease is the nation’s number one killer and there are many long held beliefs about lowering an individual’s risk of disease. One long-standing recommendation, supplementation with Omega 3, was shown to be ineffective in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease in a recent study published in the September 12th issue of JAMA. While many Americans were under the impression that supplements such as Omega 3 would improve heart health most are unaware of a highly effective preventative measure: walking 10,000 steps per day. A “Movement Revolution” started by TrekDesk Treadmill Desk hopes to change that dynamic.
The study, performed by Evangelos C. Rizos a Ph.D/M.D. and colleagues at the University Hospital of Ioannina, Greece included analysis of nearly 70,000 patients. They found no reduction in risk for cardiac death, sudden death, heart attack, stroke, nor all-cause death due to omega-3 supplementation.
It should be noted that Omega-3 supplementation has been proven beneficial for a variety of other health outcomes and by no means were the study authors advocating a cessation of this supplement.
“Walking 10,000 steps per day has been shown to reduce the risk of initial heart attacks by 90% and stroke by 70% in previous studies,” stated Steve Bordley, championing a Movement Revolution through his firm TrekDesk Treadmill Desk. “Sometimes when the solutions are right in front of us, we tend to push them to the side. Walking a minimum of 10,000 steps a day would have a dramatic impact on the health landscape of our country.”
