New Book Challenges Common Western View of China

Robert Stanelle’s ‘China: In My Eyes’ presents an honest, unfettered view of the East

“The China of today is nothing like what they tell us it is in western schools and media,” says author Robert Stanelle. “It is a far more modern, sophisticated and welcoming China where one is inspired by the energy and warmth of the people.” It is this dichotomy that he hopes to address with his new book “China: In My Eyes” (published by AuthorHouse).

In his book Stanelle presents what he believes is an unbiased look at “the real China.” He discards the preconceived notions that many Americans have, and instead tries to enlighten readers about the realities of Chinese life he experienced during his five years of teaching there.

An excerpt from “China: In My Eyes”:

“China’s leadership, in the tradition of Confucian thinking, has always been more about setting a moral example than telling people what to do. Chinese leaders are also not big on ‘sound bites’ that western leaders seem addicted to. The written word has always had more power than the spoken word in China. One thinks about things carefully before writing, much the opposite of speaking. Consequently, there is great respect for the leaders of the country here. In fact, the respect of the central government and mistrust of the local officials seems to be near the exact opposite of the American mind-set.”

In the final analysis, Stanelle’s reasons for writing are educational. “Many people are curious about the real China,” he says, “and wonder about the country and the people as compared to the often blatantly false pictures and stories presented in western media.”
