Author D.A. Nash resurrects the vibrant spirit of Anne Bonny, embellished colonial South Carolina aristocrat-turned-pirate, in her new book The Profligate. Over the years, Anne’s life story has been filled in with speculation, branding her as a hard-hearted and promiscuous woman with a vicious temper. This book attempts to expose other parts of her legend that reveal a more noble character.

This book narrates the life of Anne Bonny. The daughter of the revered Chancellor of South Carolina, Anne was only 16 when she eloped with James Bonny and was taken to the island of Providence to live among the pirates in 1716. Anne was a woman way before her time who had the courage to search for true love and discover the ultimate meaning of freedom. As she sailed the open seas under the command of John Rackam, Anne faced challenges and quests that no other woman of her era had ever endured. She followed her heart without regard for her tainted reputation, and despite the public shame of her deeds, her father’s unending love prevailed during her times of trials and tribulations. We follow their adventures with intrigue and hope for Anne, her fellow pirates, and her true love’s safety.

A historical adventure, The Profligate relives Anne Bonny’s journey as seen through her own eyes in her elder years as she reveals the uncut truth to her daughter Johanna, the truth about who her mother once was and always will be.

Her legend was originally recorded in the pages of Captain Charles Johnson’s A General History of the Robberies & Murders of the Most Notorious Pyrates (1724).
