On September 17th, the collection agency Rapid Recovery Solution responds to a published interview on The Huffington Post of four debt collectors who offer their counsel to anyone struggling with debt.

The Huffington Post spoke with debt collectors, Kerri Fivecoat, Ben Nettleton, Michelle Dunn, and Bryan Franzoi. The article refutes the misconception that all debt collectors are aggressive by stating, “Even though he has worked with some bad collectors, Franzoi said the stigma about debt collectors is just incorrect.” He explains, “Ninety-nine times out of 100 that's a totally wrong misconception and they're really trying to put them in a better financial situation.” In the article Fivecoat recommends that anyone dealing with an abusive debt collector simply ask to speak with another collector. According to the article, Dunn recommends responding to collection calls, explaining that ignoring them is the worst thing debtors can do. Dunn states, “Send a letter, at least respond in some way. Wait until they close and call, if they want to avoid the conflict.”

In addition, Nettleton expresses how frightening debt collection can be for the collector, explaining that he has received threatening voice mails and death threats. John Monderine, CEO for Long Island collection agency Rapid Recovery Solution, comments, “Debt Collectors are just doing their job. They didn't make you run up your credit; to blame them for your troubles is ludicrous. To threaten somebody's life over a bill you ran up should be a crime punishable by a long prison sentence.”

The article reports that many collectors offer payment plans to help consumers start paying back their unpaid debts. According to the article, “Dunn said she's set up payment plans for some people that were for $5 or $25 a month because, in the end, she was able to get them to commit to paying something and keep communication lines open.”
