Alabama attorney, Phillip B. Price, Sr., awarded the prestigious Erwin-Taylor Award by the National College for DUI Defense.

On July 27, 2012, prominent Huntsville, Alabama attorney, Phillip B. Price, Sr., was awarded the prestigious Erwin-Taylor Award by the National College for DUI Defense, Inc. (NCDD) at its annual summer session held at the Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The NCDD is the nation’s premier organization for DUI defense attorneys.

The NCDD was formed in 1994 to increase the competency of attorneys who practice within the DUI field. The Erwin-Taylor Award, (formerly called the Richard E. Erwin Lifetime Achievement Award) is the highest honor conferred by the NCDD. The award has only rarely been granted, and Price is only the eighth person to receive the award during the NCDD’s eighteen year history. The last time the award was granted to an attorney was 2009. It is awarded for outstanding service over time within the field of DUI defense. It was presented to Price by George Stein of Atlanta, F. K. Whited of Daytona Beach, Florida, Larry Taylor of Los Angeles, California and James F. Campbell of San Francisco, California. Phillip B. Price was one of the founders of the NCDD.

Price, whose law office is headquartered in Huntsville, Alabama, is considered one of the nation’s leading DUI defense attorneys. He has practiced DUI defense law for over 30 years, has lectured throughout the country to other attorneys on alcohol breath test issues and many other topics related to DUI defense, and is the author of the Alabama DUI Handbook, published by West®. He is a former dean of the NCDD, and was the third attorney in the United States to become a Fellow of that organization.

Price is perhaps best known among Alabama attorneys for successfully handling a series of DUI appellate cases that have brought sweeping changes to Alabama’s DUI law. For example, in 1994, in a landmark decision, he persuaded the Alabama Supreme Court to throw out the Alabama breath test program. Even the definition of DUI as a crime in Alabama stems from a case he handled in the Alabama Supreme Court.
