RosettaBooks, the leading independent eBook publisher, is pleased to announce its recent partnership with Worldreader, a nonprofit that promotes literacy among African students. RosettaBooks has helped Worldreader expand its eBook library by donating titles such as Aldous Huxley's Brave New World and Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five.

"Slaugherhouse-Five has thrilled readers worldwide for decades and now it will challenge a new generation of readers,"said RosettaBooks CEO Arthur Klebanoff.

Worldreader’s mission is to empower underprivileged students who have limited access to books by providing e-readers. Literacy is fuel for development, and according to Worldreader’s website, 50 percent of schools in sub-Saharan Africa have few or no books.

Beginning in Ghana in 2010, Worldreader has distributed e-readers to African students for classroom use. Since then, 1,000 students in Ghana, Kenya, and Uganda have had access to 425 US titles and the project continues to expand with Rwanda next in line to receive the e-readers.

"Slaughterhouse-Five was once banned in parts of the United States," said Donald C. Farber, Trustee of the Kurt Vonnegut Jr. Copyright Trust. "Kurt Vonnegut would be pleased to know it was being read by students throughout sub-Saharan Africa."

Additionally, RosettaBooks contributed Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut, A Passage to India by E.M. Forster, I Am Legend by Richard Matheson, MARS by Ben Bova, and Shoeless Joe by W.P. Kinsella.

Although some e-readers were damaged by students unintentionally, the program has since upped its education efforts about how to properly care for the technology. Combined with thicker cases, Worldreader hopes to distribute 3,500 durable readers by the end of the year. The program provides support to teachers through technical training and repair assistance. Expanding power supplies at schools and wireless internet networks help make the program more successful.

"We applaud Worldreader’s mission of bringing Kindle devices and free first class reading to sub-Saharan African students," said Klebanoff.
