After years of struggling with her childhood fear of dogs, and eventually overcoming them in adulthood, author Polly Giles shares her fear to children to help them overcome theirs. Have You Ever Been Afraid of Animals? is Giles’ colorful storybook that tells of her inspiring journey from being fearful of dogs to becoming a dog-lover and owner.
As a playful child, she had a terrible memorable experience with a dog. Her friend and neighbor, Elizabeth, introduced her to her dog, Princess. Princess was friendly at first, but then suddenly started barking. Inexplicably, Princess suddenly jumped and bit her. Luckily, the bite did not seem that critical at all. This traumatic event instilled in her a great fear of dogs.
Years later as an adult, she felt that it was time for her to overcome her fear of dogs. Providentially, she found her opportunity when she had the chance to own her first puppy, Fluffy. Raising Fluffy was instrumental in overcoming her fear; and facing her fear was one of the best things she accomplished in her adult life.
Honest, inspiring and endearing, Have You Ever Been Afraid of Animals? brings to life Giles’ story with the delightful and vibrant illustrations by Richa Kirna. With an edifying example and writing activities at the end, the book is an effective tool that helps children express and gradually overcome whatever fears they may have.
