Memories of past experiences and events are critical in decision-making processes, thoughts, and situations.
New York City, NY (PRWEB) September 28, 2012
In a recent study, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), it has been shown that rats rely on “awake memory” replay of past experiences to make current choices and decisions. Ripple-like bursts in electrical activity of the hippocampus of rats, similar to those seen during the memory consolidation periods that occur during sleep, were observed when those rats were involved in running a maze; the similarity led to this conclusion. Similar trends have been seen in people when they are involved in decision-making situations.
According to Marc Slater, Managing Director of Ultimate Memory, “The past is definitely important when studying memory. There is no question about that. We all make decisions based on the past experiences of our lives, and our memories of them.”
The study has shown that rats rely on their memories to make current choices and decisions. Likewise, the study also demonstrated that without the use of memories, rats are unable to perform at the same high level. Instead, the rats showed a significant decline in performance. Researchers also recognized that rats rely on memories, even though they last only a second or less. However, they correlate this to humans only remembering parts of an experience, or a condensed version, rather than an entire event.
“The importance of memory is undeniable,” adds Mr. Slater. “For a person to continue to improve his or her memory will prove beneficial in all areas of life. To achieve this goal, a variety of memory techniques may prove to be extremely helpful.”
Studies of memory are continuing to be conducted. However, researchers believe that they have made great strides in understanding memory and its importance. Memories of past experiences and events are critical in decision-making processes, thoughts, and situations. Therefore, it’s essential for everyone to have a strong and healthy memory.
